Cummins wins fifth Poc Fada title

Tipperary goalkeeper Brendan Cummins conquered the Annaverna Mountain in Louth for the fifth time since 2004 as he was crowned the M Donnelly All-Ireland Poc Fada champion.

Cummins completed the course in 50 pocs, beating last year's winner Graham Clarke of Down who finished behind him in second place.

The 36-year-old Premier County star won his first Poc Fada title in 2004 and was also victorious in 2006, 2007 and 2008.

He also triumphed in today's Comortas Beirte (Pairs) competition with Down's Karol Keating in 109 pocs. Wexford's Mark Butler and the aforementioned Clarke came second with 111 pocs, and Tadhg Haran of Galway and James McGarry of Kilkenny were third overall (114 pocs).

Meanwhile, Waterford's Patricia Jackman gained a record three in-a-row of Camogie Poc Fada titles. She matched her 28-poc tally from last year.

Offaly's Cillian Kiely (opposite) was the winner of the Under-16 event with 24 pocs.

50th Anniversary Programme Print Email

50th Anniversary Programme

2011 is an historic year in the history of An Poc Fada Craobh na hÉireann and a special 50th Anniversary Programme has been prepared to celebrate the milestone.

It recalls significant people and events in the history of this special hurling contest and should no doubt prompt many good memories for quite a few people.

The programme contains lots of interesting articles as well as "Player Profiles" for the Roll of Honour members, Hall of Fame members, photographs from the early years of the '60s and the '80s.

There are also reports on this year's Provincial Finals and of course information about this year's finalists.

The programme will be available on the mountain for €5


We are delighted to have Carlingford Adventure Centre on board offering lifts to those who require same from the gate at the Annaverna track to the Start/Finish area of "An Fhána Mór".

Thomas McArdle and crew will be on the Mountain from 11.30 until 13.30. Many thanks!

Under 16s start at 12.00pm, followed by the Camogs and then the Senior Hurlers.

The 2010 All Star Goalkeeper and 4 times Poc Fada Champion Brendan Cummins will be back in familiar surroundings this weekend!

Brendan will be joined by James Mc Garry of Kilkenny, Christy O'Connor of Clare and Davy Fitzgerald (Clare) to complete the Senior Poc Fada line up.

The draw for the order of play upon final confirmation of the competitors' line up took place on Saturday 23rd August at Fr. McEvoy Park the home of Cooley Kickhams close to Carlingford on the Cooley Peninsula

Ann Callan (Vice Chairperson Cooley Kickhams),Nicholas Rafferty (Cooley Kickhams) Damien Callan (Vice Chairman “An Coiste Poc Fada”) and Shay Larkin (P.R.O. “An Coiste Poc Fada”) officiated while the young Hurlers of Cooley drew the numbers for the order of play as part of the 50th Anniversary Celebrations and also reconnecting with a club which alongside Naomh Monnine and in conjunction with the Carlingford Oyster Festival were instrumental in the “Revival” of An Poc Fada in 1981.

On Friday the 29th of July there will be an under 14 Poc Fada on Slieve Foy at 4.30 and later that evening there will be an underage hurling Blitz at Cooley Kickhams’ Grounds. Local Louth, Armagh & Down hurling Clubs will be represented and it is expected that some of the hurlers participating in the All Ireland Poc Fada Final the next day will be attending the underage celebration of hurling.

Antrim Hurler called up for Ulster in this year's All Ireland Poc Fada Final.Derry's Ruairi Convery is out through injury, his second consecutive year to pull out of the All Ireland event.

Neil McManus Poc Fada

Neil Mc Manus (Aontroim) the Ruairi Og Cushendall clubman visits the All Ireland Poc Fada contest for the first time. Neil is a regular on the Antrim Senior Hurling Team (Debut in 2007) and one of the county's top goal scorers.
